World Cup Heatwave Is a Wake-Up Call for Stadium Hydration, Says Sweden’s Bluewater
Global sporting events shouldn’t be serving yesterday’s water solution in tomorrow’s climate.
Stockholm, Sweden, July 6, 2026 -- As football fans pack stadiums across North America during one of the hottest summers on record, Swedish water company Bluewater believes the FIFA World Cup should prompt a rethink of something every spectator depends on yet few stop to consider — drinking water.
With temperatures climbing to sweltering levels across parts of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, staying hydrated isn’t just about comfort. For millions of supporters, volunteers, stadium staff, and athletes, it’s becoming a serious health issue.
Yet many sports venues still rely on a system from another era: selling or distributing countless single-use plastic bottles that must be transported, chilled, stored, and eventually thrown away.
“Sport is about bringing out the best in people,” said Bluewater founder and CEO Bengt Rittri. “The water we provide should do the same. If fans are expected to sit for hours in extreme heat, they deserve unlimited access to great-tasting water that keeps them hydrated, not another disposable plastic bottle.”
The numbers tell their own story. Professional sports venues across North America welcome well over 200 million spectators each year, and hundreds of millions more attend college sports, concerts, and festivals. At the same time, according to the United Nations Environment Programme, about one million plastic beverage bottles are purchased worldwide every minute. Most will never become another bottle. Instead, they end up in landfills, are burned, or enter rivers and oceans.
Rittri believes that major sporting events have both the visibility and the responsibility to lead change.
“We’ve reached a point where there really isn’t an excuse anymore,” he said. “Technology has moved on. Today, it’s entirely possible to give every fan unlimited access to premium chilled still and sparkling water while dramatically reducing plastic waste. That’s a win for supporters, venue operators, and the environment.”
Bluewater’s award-winning refill stations use the company’s proprietary SuperiorOsmosis™ technology to remove up to 99.7 percent of known water contaminants, including PFAS “forever chemicals,” microplastics, heavy metals, and other unwanted substances. The purified water is then enhanced with Bluewater’s Swedish-developed LiquidRock® minerals to create water that not only tastes exceptional but also supports hydration and well-being.
Instead of moving truckloads of bottled water from the warehouse to the stadium and then hauling away mountains of empty plastic afterward, venues can provide unlimited premium drinking water through permanent refill stations that cut waste, reduce transportation emissions, and simplify operations.
Bluewater has already demonstrated the role premium hydration can play at world-class sporting events. As the Official Water Purification Partner of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and through partnerships with leading international sporting organizations and venues, the Stockholm-based company is helping redefine what modern, sustainable hydration looks like on the global stage.
“The World Cup will be remembered for great goals and unforgettable moments,” said Rittri. “But I’d like it to be remembered for something else, a moment when sport recognized that protecting people’s health and the planet can go hand in hand. Every refill instead of another plastic bottle is a small decision. Multiply that by millions of fans, and suddenly it’s a very big one.”
As the tournament continues under the North American summer sun, Bluewater believes the future of stadium hydration is clear: unlimited access to premium drinking water that’s better for people and far better for the planet.
