Bluewater calls for greater global awareness about staying hydrated as longer and hotter heat seasons increase health risks

“Heatwaves are among the most dangerous natural hazards, and climate change is increasing their frequency, intensity, and duration, posing growing risks to human health.” – World Health Organization.

Stockholm, Sweden, June 7, 2026 -- Summer is not only getting hotter, but also longer and more intense across much of the world, says a new study published in Environmental Research Letters.

With summer now lasting up to a month longer in some regions than in 1990 according to the study, Sweden's global water purification and beverage company Bluewater today called for greater global awareness of hydration safety, warning that higher temperatures and longer heatwaves are increasing the risk of heat-related illness and dehydration during everyday activities.

Scientists at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have warned there is an 80% chance of a warming "El Niño" event this summer. The UN is advising countries to get ready, since El Niño raises sea temperatures, increases global heat, and causes more extreme weather. Forecasts predict it will happen between June and August 2026, with a 90% chance it will last until November.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also forecast a hotter-than-normal summer. The NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, says widespread above-average temperatures are expected across most of the United States this summer.

“You don’t have to be a health expert to know that heat causes people to lose fluids faster and makes it harder for the body to stay cool and raises the risk of dehydration,” says Bluewater CEO and founder Bengt Rittri.

He points out that people often forget to stay hydrated, and dehydration can begin even before you feel thirsty.

The Bluewater chief executive urged individuals and households to take immediate, practical steps to stay hydrated, including drinking water regularly throughout the day, increasing fluid intake during heat exposure and physical activity, and carefully supervising children to ensure they stay hydrated during outdoor play and sports.

Public health experts say that children, older adults, and people who are very active are most at risk during hot weather.

Bluewater also highlights growing global concern about drinking water quality, including PFAS chemicals, microplastics, and other emerging contaminants found in some tap and bottled water supplies.

The company explained that its advanced water purification systems for home, work, and public spaces harness the company's unique SuperiorOsmosis technology to deliver safer hydration by removing various contaminants and helping people stay consistently hydrated without depending on single-use plastic bottled water.

“As summers get hotter, we urge everyone to make daily hydration a priority by drinking water regularly. Think of hydration as an important way to protect your health. Take steps now to keep yourself and your family safe,” Rittri said.
